PREVIOUS POST BELOW ###

With more time at home, many of us are finding the opportunity to read that book that has been calling us for months.  And perhaps you are finding the time you need to clear clutter around your home.  Foundation Volunteer Sandy Hayes has put those ideas together to do good: A children’s book drive.

Let’s have a children’s book drive!

Based on the knowledge that access to books at home positively impacts the academic growth of students and their future ability to gain employment; and that there is a large disparity in the number of books a student has access to because of family income levels; the Northshore Schools Foundation is hosting a children’s book drive to help those who may have children’s books stored safely in their home, gathering dust and get them to students who need them.

“My youngest child is 18, and in my head, I was saving them [the books] for grandchildren.  The books need to be in the hands of children reading them. I put together two boxes of picture and young adult books and brought them to one of our neighborhoods and in a half an hour, one box was gone, said Hayes.”    We think we can do more.

Why books in the home are so important

Earlier this month, in response to the COVID-19 virus, our libraries have closed, greatly restricting free access to books for all families.

In 2001, a study was done that found that in middle-class neighborhoods, children have multiple opportunities to use and purchase age-appropriate books, an average of 13 books per child.   In low-income households, it is one book per 300 children.  We have just closed the libraries in our area.

According to Scholastic Books site and findings published by Pacific Standard, literacy levels for students surge at 80 books. Being surrounded by lots and lots of books where they live helps children build vocabulary, increase awareness and comprehension, and expand horizons — all benefiting them in adulthood, according to the study. But beyond literacy, the study’s authors found a correlation between homes full of books and both the “ability to use mathematical concepts in everyday life” and “the ability to use digital technology to communicate with others.” Books in the home make a difference beyond literacy.

Donating Books

We are looking for children’s books… and that includes teen readers and chapter books.

We have currently set up one collection site on the covered porch of our founding volunteer at: 13147 NE 145th Pl, Kirkland, 98034.

In order to comply with social distancing measures, we are asking that you leave boxed/bagged books on the porch, with your name and address so we could thank you.  Ideally, you would also sanitize them ahead of time (and if you do, please leave a note to tell us you did so).  How to sanitize books: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icZtXX2CXuQ

Our team of volunteers will ensure that the books are safe and get them in the hands of students who need them.
